Saving Your Relationship After Infidelity
If you can see the signs that your relationship is falling apart, you probably want to find a way to stop a break up from happening. There are ways to do this, however, every situation is different. One common reason for a relationship to collapse is cheating. The following will give you some ideas about what to do after infidelity.
If you are the one who did the cheating, realize that talking is not enough. Simply telling your partner you can change isn’t going to do. You have to actually make the change. Take action and start the process of demonstrating that you are worth a second chance.
Start by taking responsibility for what you did. The reality is that there is no one to blame for the situation but yourself. Be willing to accept that and acknowledge it with your partner. Doing so without trying to pass blame or judgment onto someone else is going to do a lot for helping you rebuild things with your partner.
You also need to realize that when a trust has been broken, there is the possibility that it may never be rebuilt. Even so, you have to take an active role in demonstrating to your partner that they can trust you again. You need to make sure that any and every time they need you, you are available. You need to become the most dependable person they have in their life.
Additionally, you need to make sure that you completely break contact with the person you cheated with – permanently. No calls, no “running into each other”, no emails. This person needs to no longer exist for you and, more importantly, your partner. At no time should your partner ever feel like that person is a threat. Anything that connects that person to your life needs to be thrown out in an obvious manner that your partner can see.
Finally, realize that your partner may need some time and space to decide on what they want to do next. It is very important that you let them have that space. That may even mean allowing the relationship to break up for a certain period of time. Trying to keep them from leaving will only make things worse. If they need time, let them have it and set up a plan on how you will win them back. A relationship does not have to end after infidelity, however, you must be prepared to go above and beyond to demonstrate that you can be trusted again.
